Mera Update

"We can't stress just how awesome Mera is! She continues to adjust well to our home, our schedule and fits in like she's been with us forever!

We no longer crate her, actually we even removed the crate from our home. She must have had a negative experience in the past related to a crate, so we decided it was best to remove it altogether. She must have connected with us deeply as she takes one shoe for each of us (one of Nathaniel's, one of Tom's, and one of mine) and puts it in her bed while we are gone and lays with them. We receive hundreds of kisses when we return home! She never damages anything and we usually find her relaxing by the door waiting for us to return home! She is sooooooooooooooo smart and lets us know that she needs to go out by bring us our shoes to put on! These are not things we taught her, but things she does on her own!

She is so playful, yet gentle with us. She has grown to trust us and lets us do anything to her! She especially loves when we rub her and grabs our arm for more! She continues to sleep in Nathaniel's room in her own bed on the floor. It is soooooooooooooo cute as she checks to be sure he is in his bed before she lays down to go to sleep! She will not go in her bed until she knows he is in his bed! She also nuzzles him in the morning to wake him up for school! He is just so thrilled with having her join our family! Tom and I both know we really got lucky when we found her!

Bima’s Story

A young black cat was found by quietly meowing outside a country garage. On closer inspection, Bill and Martha noted that the limping cat had a severe injury to his left front leg. There were also many BBs found under the kitten’s black coat. Animal Resource Center volunteers were contacted and the cat was taken to see Dr. Smith at Leighow Veterinary. The leg injury was from an animal trap. An amputation had to be done to save his life. Funds remaining from the generous response to Trina’s appeal were available to cover this surgery.

Bima (an Indonesian word for Brave) is a very friendly, sleek black cat who enjoys treats and belly rubs. He is currently recuperating in his foster home. He was very quiet during the first week following surgery but now has discovered that he can run up and down steps and play chase with 3 other cats in the home. He has also become acquainted with 2 large dogs. Bima, an inquisitive young cat, can teach us all a lesson in courage.

Trina’s Story

It was a cold early morning after an extremely cold night. A small brown box was found on the doorstep. Kristie looked inside and found a tiny kitten with her young mother. The mother cat seemed to be doing well but the kitten, who she named Trina, had red, inflamed eyes. The veterinarian diagnosed Trina with a severe eye infection. It had already caused blindness. Both eyes had to be removed to control the kitten’s pain and infection. With community donations by animal loving people and the contribution of services of the Animal Care Center’s Dr. Berg and Campbell, Trina was able to have her surgery. Sweet Trina did well after the surgery.

She is currently recuperating well with her mother in Kristie’s home. She is learning to find her way around a familiar environment and enjoys being held and cuddled. More information on caring for cats with handicaps can be found at http://www.messybeast.com/disabled.htm

Mera has a home!

Hi everyone! Cyndi and Mary took Mera to her new home today! She did awesome! She went right to the front door like she knew it was her home. Mary says, "The people (from Palmerton, PA - going towards Allentown) are fantastic. I would give them any dog! I'm sure she'll do great!"

Wish her luck! The adoptive family wrote an email saying, "You cannot imagine how excited Nathaniel is! Mera has been wonderful all day, she found a spot on the carpet about ten minutes after you and Cyndi left and snuggled down with her legs sprawled out! She is very playful, yet very gentle with us when she grabs our hand to keep rubbing her. We took her for a walk and she went to the bathroom outside! We also left her in her crate for about an hour while we took Nathaniel for baseball sign-ups. When we returned her tail was wagging and we didn't hear a single growl! When we let her out of her crate, we got lots of kisses! One thing that was unusual that happened was when Tom was starting a fire in the wood burner. He uses a newspaper to start the fire, so he went into the closet where we keep a box full of old newspapers. When he walked over to the woodstove holding the newspaper and Mera saw him, she started to growl at the newspaper. She must have had a bad past experience connected to newspapers. She listens very well and she has really been very calm! I believe we found a gem! Thank you! I'll keep you updated on Mera as she adjusts here in her new home! Jamie"

Items needed

We need donations of any brand of powdered he (High Efficiency) laundry detergent. Look for the blue swirly with the letters (he) as in this picture. We cannot use regular detergent. It must be (he) rated.

We also need your old towels for wiping down the dogs after they play outside. Most of the dogs like to curl up in the towels, too.
